Elliston
A small west-coast town on Waterloo Bay, famous for its spectacular clifftop sculpture drive and powerful surf breaks.
A town between bay and cliff
Elliston wraps around the protected curve of Waterloo Bay on the west coast of the Eyre Peninsula, but its fame lies on the cliffs. The Great Ocean Tourist Drive, a clifftop loop around Anxious Bay, strings together dramatic lookouts and large-scale sculptures along the edge of the Southern Ocean, the artworks added over the years by local and visiting artists. Below the headlands, Blackfellows is celebrated as one of the coast's most powerful left-hand surf breaks, while Locks Well and the beaches toward Sheringa draw anglers chasing Australian salmon.
Country and community
This is the traditional Country of the Nauo people, and the town carries a layered history. Named after the writer and educator Ellen Liston, Elliston is also home to the Elliston community hall mural, reputed to be the largest single mural of its kind in Australia. A heritage-listed jetty still reaches into the bay.
What visitors do
Days here are spent driving the clifftops, walking the coastal trail and watching for sea lions, dolphins and, between June and October, southern right whales. Further north, the Talia Caves reveal The Tub, a vast sea-fed crater, and the honeycombed Woolshed Cave, while Lake Newland Conservation Park, Walkers Rock Beach and the sweeping sands toward Talia round out a wild, uncrowded coast.
