Blackfellows
Elliston's premier reef break, a powerful left-hander that draws experienced surfers to the edge of Anxious Bay.
Blackfellows is the wave that put Elliston on the surfing map. Breaking over reef at the southern end of Anxious Bay, it is a powerful, hollow left that can hold real size when the Southern Ocean delivers, and it commands respect from everyone who paddles out.
This is not a beginner's beach. The break works best on a solid swell with the right wind, and the cold, remote water and reef bottom mean it is the domain of confident surfers. For everyone else, the cliff tops above offer a grandstand view of the sets marching in.
There are no facilities at the break itself, so surfers come self-sufficient from Elliston township nearby. Check the swell and wind, respect the locals and the conditions, and you will understand why this corner of the coast has such a reputation.
