A dramatic surf beach south of Elliston, famous as one of the best beach salmon-fishing spots in the state — reached by a long clifftop staircase.
One of the great salmon beaches
Locks Well, between Elliston and Sceale Bay, is renowned across South Australia as one of the premier beach salmon-fishing destinations. Anglers descend the long clifftop staircase to cast into the gutters where Australian salmon school in big numbers, particularly in autumn.
The beach is equally prized by surfers for its consistent Southern Ocean break, and by everyone else for the sheer drama of the setting. The lookout at the top of the stairs offers one of the finest coastal views on the west coast, with the surf pounding the long beach far below.
