Anxious Bay
A wide, swell-magnet bay at Elliston with a famous surf break and the offshore Waldegrave Islands on the horizon.
Anxious Bay wraps around the township of Elliston and pulls in some of the most consistent surf on the west coast. The bay's exposure to Southern Ocean swell makes it a serious wave when it is on, and the reef break here has long held a near-mythic status among South Australian surfers.
The bay is more than a surf spot. The Waldegrave Islands sit offshore, the cliff-top Great Ocean Tourist Drive begins on the headland to the north, and the long jetty reaches out into water that ranges from glassy to ferocious depending on the day.
Elliston town has fuel, food and a caravan park, making the bay an easy base. Surfers should know their limits here, as the break is powerful and the water cold, but even watching the swell roll in from the foreshore is worth the trip.
