Streaky Bay Powerhouse Museum
A volunteer-run museum in Streaky Bay built around the town's original diesel powerhouse and restored engines.
How the lights came on
Before the grid reached the far west coast, towns like Streaky Bay made their own power, and the old diesel powerhouse here is the heart of this engaging little museum. The great stationary engines that once hummed away supplying the town have been lovingly restored by volunteers.
Around them the museum gathers the wider story of the district — agricultural machinery, household and farming objects, photographs and memorabilia that trace the hard, ingenious work of settling this remote coast.
It is the sort of place where the enthusiasm of the volunteers is half the attraction, and it makes a good rainy-day or hot-afternoon stop in town.
