Wild West Coast Road Trip
Three days of cliffs, blowholes and turquoise bays from Coffin Bay to Streaky Bay
The plan
From Port Lincoln to Ceduna, the west coast of the Eyre Peninsula is a procession of towering cliffs, blowholes, surf breaks and impossibly turquoise bays. This is one of South Australia’s great undersung road trips — wild, remote and endlessly photogenic.
Day 1 — Coffin Bay National Park
Leave Port Lincoln and lose yourself in Coffin Bay National Park: the white sand of Almonta Beach, the surf-pounded reefs of Point Avoid and the wide calm of Long Beach.
Day 2 — Elliston to Streaky Bay
Drive the clifftop Great Ocean Tourist Drive at Elliston, stopping for the sculptures and the vertigo-inducing views over Anxious Bay. Continue to Talia Caves and the Locks Well surf beach.
Day 3 — The Streaky Bay coast
Loop Westall Way for blowholes and wind-carved granite, photograph the giant boulders at The Granites, then end at Point Labatt to watch Australia’s only permanent mainland sea lion colony.
Much of this route is unsealed and remote. Carry water, fuel up often and check conditions before leaving the highway.
