Point Avoid
A dramatic clifftop lookout in Coffin Bay National Park with views over Golden Island, surf-pounded reefs and frequent whale sightings in season.
Point Avoid is one of the great vantage points of the lower Eyre Peninsula — a rugged headland where the Southern Ocean throws itself against offshore reefs and Golden Island sits just beyond the break. Short walking trails lead to several lookouts.
Between May and October southern right whales pass close to this coast, and Point Avoid is among the better land-based spots to scan for them. Even without whales, the raw power of the swell and the colour of the water make it worth the drive.
