Gunyah Beach

A vast sweep of dune-backed sand on the ocean side of Coffin Bay National Park, famous for its towering mobile dunes.

Gunyah Beach is where Coffin Bay National Park turns its back on the sheltered inlets and faces the full Southern Ocean. A long, often empty arc of sand runs beneath some of the largest mobile sand dunes on the Eyre Peninsula, pale mountains that shift and reshape with the wind.

Four-wheel-drivers air down and run the beach (a permit and tide awareness are essential), while walkers climb the dunes for sweeping views back over the park's mallee. The surf here is raw and the beach is exposed, so it is more a place for big-sky walks, fishing and dune adventures than for casual swimming.

Reach it via the unsealed park roads from Coffin Bay township. Carry recovery gear if you drive the sand, and check tides before committing to the run.
