Whyalla Conservation Park

A pocket of semi-arid bushland with a trail up Wild Dog Hill through mallee and bluebush to long views over the plains.

Where the outback meets the gulf

Just north of Whyalla, this small conservation park protects a slice of the semi-arid country that gives the upper Eyre Peninsula its character — silvery bluebush and saltbush flats, dense mallee, and the rocky outcrop of Wild Dog Hill rising abruptly from the plain.

A walking trail climbs through the scrub to the top of the hill, where the rust-red rock frames views back over the saltbush country and out toward the gulf. After winter rains the ground can be flecked with hardy wildflowers, and euros (hill kangaroos), emus and reptiles are often about in the cooler hours.

It is an easy escape from town and a good introduction to the arid landscapes that define the inland Eyre Peninsula.
