Mount Laura Homestead Museum
A volunteer-run heritage precinct around a restored 1920s homestead, with a telegraph station and pioneer memorabilia.
A homestead full of stories
Mount Laura Homestead is the home of the National Trust in Whyalla, a sprawling collection of buildings and machinery that tell the story of how this corner of the gulf went from pastoral leases to a steel town.
The centrepiece is the restored homestead, furnished as it might have been in the early twentieth century. Around it you will find a telegraph station, a railway and signalling display, a mineral and geology collection reflecting the region's mining heritage, and rooms packed with the everyday objects of pioneer life.
Run by dedicated volunteers, it is the kind of museum where the people behind the counter often have a personal connection to the stories on display.
