Salmon Hole
A surf-fringed pocket of white sand inside Coffin Bay National Park, named for the schools of salmon that run the gutters.
Tucked between Almonta Beach and Point Avoid in the wild southern reaches of Coffin Bay National Park, Salmon Hole is the kind of beach that rewards the gravel-road drive in. The sand is squeak-underfoot white, the water glows turquoise on a calm day, and the headlands wrap just enough to take the edge off the Southern Ocean swell.
Anglers come for the salmon that give the spot its name, casting into the gutters that form along the shore. Surfers find peeling lefts and rights when the swell lines up, and walkers link the beach to Point Avoid and Golden Island lookout along the cliff tops.
There are no facilities here, so bring water, sun cover and everything you carry out. Swimming demands respect for rips and the open-ocean exposure, but on the right day this is one of the most beautiful corners of the whole peninsula.
