Hummock Hill Lookout

Where Whyalla began — and was defended

The hill where Whyalla was founded in 1901, fortified with WWII gun emplacements that now frame a sweeping lookout over the steelworks, marina and gulf.

The founding hill

Whyalla began at Hummock Hill. The first European settlement was established on the beach at its base in 1901, when BHP needed a port for iron ore tramped down from the Middleback Ranges, and the town that became a steel city grew outward from this one rise. For the Barngarla people the hill was significant long before that — both as a campground and in their mythology.

The guns

During the Second World War, Hummock Hill earned a stranger distinction: it was fortified. With the Whyalla shipyards and steelworks judged a potential target, the hill became a gun battery and observation post, and the concrete emplacements survive today, complete with a restored anti-aircraft gun. When the lookout was redeveloped in the 1980s — a BHP centenary gift to the city — the designers built the viewing platforms into the old fortifications, so you scan the horizon from the same spots the gunners once did.

The view

And what a horizon: the steelworks in operatic profile, ore ships in the gulf, the marina and foreshore below, and on clear days the Flinders Ranges floating across the water. It is the essential first stop for understanding Whyalla — industry, ocean and outback in a single panorama — before descending to the Maritime Museum to meet the warship the shipyards built.
