Point Sinclair & Cactus Beach Surf
A world-renowned trio of surf breaks at remote Point Sinclair near Penong, drawing pilgrims to Castles, Caves and Cactus.
Cactus Beach is the stuff of Australian surfing legend. Out past Penong, down a dusty track to remote Point Sinclair, three world-class breaks line up within a short paddle of each other: Cactus, Castles and Caves. For decades, surfers have made the long pilgrimage west to ride these powerful, consistent left and right reef waves.
The setting is starkly beautiful, fringed by pink salt lakes and low dune scrub, with a no-frills campground that is part of the legend. There is no surf shop, no cafe, no crowd in the conventional sense, just the waves, the sharks-and-all wildness, and a deep sense of being at the edge of the country.
This is a place for experienced, self-sufficient surfers; sharks are a genuine consideration and facilities are minimal. Bring everything you need, respect the long-standing camp etiquette, and you will understand why Cactus has such a hold on the surfing imagination.
