The Upper Gulf Heritage Loop

Two days tracing the steel city and the jetty towns of the eastern gulf.

2 days History, industry and quiet coast 6 stops

The eastern, gulf-facing side of the Eyre Peninsula is its industrious heart — a coast of steelworks, grain jetties and quiet fishing towns, where calm water meets a hard-working history.

The plan

Start in Whyalla, climbing Hummock Hill for the lay of the land before exploring the maritime museum and the giant-cuttlefish snorkelling at Point Lowly. Trace the gulf history at Mount Laura Homestead, then drive south to Cowell, where oysters are farmed and rare jade is mined nearby. Wander the foreshores and jetties at Arno Bay and the wildlife of the wetlands along the way.

It is a different Eyre Peninsula to the surf coast — gentler water, big skies over the gulf, and a story of people making a living from sea and stone.
