Cowell Oysters & Jade
Famous Oysters & Southern Hemisphere Jade
An east-coast town on Franklin Harbour, known for its prized oysters and one of the largest jade deposits in the southern hemisphere.
Oysters from a hidden harbour
Cowell sits on Franklin Harbour, an almost landlocked bay whose clean, sheltered waters grow oysters celebrated for their quality. The town's oyster industry is a cornerstone of local life, and fresh oysters are easy to come by straight from the source.
Cowell has a second, lesser-known claim to fame: the hills nearby hold one of the largest known jade deposits in the southern hemisphere, mined and worked locally. With safe swimming, easy fishing and a heritage main street, the town is a classic, unhurried stop on the Lincoln Highway.
