Pildappa Rock

A giant pink granite inselberg near Minnipa with a perfect "wave" formation, often called a friendlier rival to Wave Rock.

Pildappa Rock rises out of the wheat country near Minnipa, a great dome of pink granite that locals will happily tell you rivals Western Australia's famous Wave Rock, without the crowds. Along one flank the stone curls into a smooth concave wave, sculpted by millennia of weathering, that begs to be photographed.

You can walk to the summit for big views across the Eyre Peninsula's central plains, explore the gnamma holes (natural rock wells once used by Aboriginal people), and watch the colours of the granite shift through the day. A free campground at the base makes it a popular overnight stop.

The rock is an easy detour off the Eyre Highway via Minnipa. Bring water, wear grippy shoes for the granite, and time your visit for sunrise or sunset when the rock glows its deepest pink.
