Straddling the country between the gulf town of Cowell and the wheat town of Kimba, Lake Gilles Conservation Park takes in a great shimmering salt lake fringed by dense mallee and broken by granite outcrops.
The park is prized as habitat for the malleefowl - the remarkable mound-building bird of the mallee - along with a host of reptiles, kangaroos and arid-country birds. The salt lake itself is a stark, beautiful sight, dry and glittering for much of the year.
This is undeveloped wilderness with minimal facilities, best appreciated by travellers who relish remote, quiet country and the particular character of the inland Eyre Peninsula.
