A pristine white-sand cove in a strictly protected wilderness area, named by Matthew Flinders for the crew he lost here in 1802.
Flinders' memorial coast
In February 1802, while charting this coast, Matthew Flinders sent a cutter ashore to find fresh water. It capsized in heavy seas and eight men were lost. Flinders named the surrounding capes after each of them and called the bay Memory Cove in their memory.
Today the cove sits within the Memory Cove Wilderness Area, one of the most tightly protected pockets of coast in South Australia. The reward for securing one of the limited permits is a flawless arc of white sand, crystalline water and a campsite under skies utterly free of light pollution.
